The arrest of the CFO, Meng Wanzhou, of Huawei which is a telecom giant as well as a leading provider of networking equipment and consumer electronics has resulted in heightening the tensions between China and Canada. The business executive from China, Meng Wanzhou who is also known as Sabrina Meng and Cathy Meng was taken in custody in Canada because of the request made by the United States.
Meng was blamed of committing fraud about the business connections of company in Iran. The United States accused her of handling dirty money and also claimed that she was avoiding traveling to the U.S. since April 2017 because she knew that there was a criminal investigation going on against her.
This has ended in a tug of war going on between the two countries leading criticism for one other from both sides. Lately, the Chinese representative had threatened Ottawa for making a wise decision or there would be possible consequences in case Canada banned Huawei from taking part and distributing the equipment to the 5G networks of Canada.
In the middle of this bilateral dispute among the two nations, the Chinese court has awarded death sentence to Mr. Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, who was primarily sentenced to fifteen years in prison. The reporters say that this decision was reversed all of a sudden within only four days’ notice and it might be a diplomatic action for negotiating the discharge of Meng Wanzhou. This decision was criticized by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau and also the Government of Australia who expressed their worries over this biased death sentence for a planning to smuggle drugs to Australia.
Regardless of being released on bail, Sabrina Meng is still expected to take part in the legal hearings in the coming years.
