The world is still in the nation state’s vaunted revival for three years. Citizens, as you will see, put aside their differences and welcome them under the banner. Other loyalties that they might feel — to their politics, to the world commons — have fallen victim to the one true type of human affiliation. “Oh, get a room,” you sigh, frolic and frolic. Only look at America’s watertight unity. Just look at the UK’s unity.
If the voice here is farcical, the 2016 triumphalism was so looking back. Note, nationalists have not only claimed nation-states can regain institutional control from international institutions. He said the nation-state was the true locus of the race of the people. Hence Donald Trump’s big election as president of the United States and that other racist move, Brexit.
More than one-third of Republicans and nearly half of Democrats would be a little or very unhappy if their child had been asked to do a lot of personal-examination since then when they married someone who favoured the opposition party Globalists. If I ask them to return the favour, nationalists will forgive me. It’s just that it turns out that many citizens are at least as connected to their economic tribe as to their nation.
They put the economy first on their terms as long as it is governed. Until 2016, this was valid, but the schism has since deepened.
No matter what he does, a significant minority of Americans will vote for Trump. More than one-third of Republicans and nearly half of Democrats would be a little or very dissatisfied if their child were to marry someone who favoured the opposition party. The Atlantic’s new edition, an unhysterical publication, has as its optimistic theme “How to Avoid a Civil War.”
The intention here is not to mourn the polarization of politics. That was achieved with no effect, in spades. The argument is to ask how it fits as the glue of all glues with the notion of nationhood. Unless nationalists were right, then by now they would have sought a modus vivendi for people with conflicting policies. A passport would override the party as defining it. It hasn’t been for millions of people–enough to be a problem, anyway. Today’s tensions were intra-national.
It’s not enough to suggest that if only the other side gets behind it, the nation-state would be in a stable shape. As one instance, in the nationalist case, there was no “if” before. For another, it’s not as if in partisan fighting, their side, the right, is squeamish.
No, an honest nationalist must admit that under stress national identity has turned out to be weaker than ever before. It was, in all candour, weaker than I had ever believed, a horned and moustache-twirling globalist. Or assumed. Give me patriotism, even jingoism, over a feral policy that is never wrong with one’s team. It’s a party that turned out to be the final shelter of the scoundrel.
