Walmart taping into the digital Healthcare industry


Walmart Inc. is an American multinational retail corporation that operates more than 11,200 stores in 27 countries. It also has e-commerce sites in 10 countries and is slowly expanding its health-care walk-in clinics in a small number of stores.

However, for the first time Walmart, which has 4,756 stores in the U.S. is adding on a digital healthcare site which is called this website provides the consumers with web tools that allow them to book online doctor appointments such as for dentists, physician or an eye doctor.

Walmart provides much cheaper services as compared to the other sites such as 30 for a physical, $50 for a dental exam and $45 for an eye exam. However, these charges are for the early in-clinic appointments. The rest of the walk-in clinic appointments charge much higher fees for a basic physical checkup. The industry analyst stated that typical telehealth visits costs between $40 to $70 per episode of care. Walmart has only yet given information for the patients that have to pay on their own to avail of the services. Payment details regarding patients that already own insurance are yet to be posted.

At the moment is an undeveloped website dissimilar to the other digital healthcare sites the Walmart website doesn’t offer telehealth visits, post health and wellness checkups. Healthcare holds a major market share for Walmart as its wholesale chain has 599 stores. Health and wellness products, including prescriptions, also accounts for about $35.80 billion in annual sales.

Walmart has only just begun to tap into the Healthcare industry competing with big names such as CVS Health and Walgreens-Boots Alliance Inc. which are increasing their investment by each year to at least $1 billion to offer even more digital Healthcare services. Amazon has also identified this opportunity and beginning to take a step into it.
